Ashley, 5th grade The Green Acres Science Garden, our, "Living Schoolyard", has been an integral part of Green Acres School for over 25 years. Currently Claire Witherspoon and Trish Hildinger run the program. All classes rotate through the garden on a weekly basis. Students learn about organic gardening, science, and nutrition in a hands-on setting. Each class has their own garden and there are beds used by Special Education, Kid Care, and parents. Students in the third through the fifth grades may have their own garden beds, or share with friends, during Lunchtime Gardening. The general areas of the garden include a greenhouse, an arbor and brick seating area, a pond, a large compost pile and an indoor classroom next to the garden. Our Nature Area is where students can study about Native Americans and Pioneers, and observe California native plants and animals in action.
